I have five machines ranging from Singer to Kenmore and a serger plus an antique Singer Feather Weight machine that sews flawlessly and have been sewing for 45 years so I know a little something about the craft.the thread was jammed in the bobbin area.I should have waited on giving a review. It was cheaper and the only difference seemed to be fewer stitch options.I’d like to try my hand at leather luggage is my end goal. This was fixed by setting the stitch WIDTH to 0.I was going to purchase this machine back in November, as I needed a machine to handle automotive upholstery and other heavy fabrics. The stitch selection covers anything I might have need for , and the auto-buttonhole function is pretty cool.In that time I’ve made close to 30 quilts, 20some purses, totes and bags, and about a dozen items of clothing. The regular sewing machine just couldn’t handle either of those.Weighs about 35lbs and has an externally housed motor) for years. This machine feels cheap and flimsy. Both died with the same problem: The bottom thread just tangles under the fabric, and does not interlock with the top thread. The only catch is that I have to take it to an official warranty center.I had an old Brother that lasted for years…and I abused it with heavy weight fabrics, etc.I settled on this machine after reading reviews that suggested that starting with a beginner-friendly machine might leave me looking to upgrade shortly in order to sew heavier fabrics like canvas, which I intend to do.I have used a variety of machines over the years and I would recommend this machine.Usually when I forgot to lower the presser foot, and got a bird’s nest in the bobbin area for my trouble.Although seeing so many positive reviews, I was not as impressed.I kept telling myself that the fault could not be the brand new Singer machine because in my mind, Singer has a good reputation.

The machine was well packed. Some of the repairs were just blown seams – a couple involved the heavy strap webbing.Singer customer service has been very responsive via email by suggesting ways to resolve my issue.I read a review complaining about the speed but she loves it, that and the ability to handle heavyweight materials.Since I am familiar with sewing machines in general, mind you I am not a pro just familiar with how the mechanism works.Within a month it started bird nesting on bottom of the sewing….The first thing I noticed was how bad the light is.In short, my machine had a clearance problem in the mechanism that picks up the upper thread and winds it around the bobbin.Planned on making quilts, and doing basic hem work. When she went to use it, it was clearly not working properly .The first 2 projects I completed were made of a fairly heavy canvas type material. The thread keeps breaking even on quilted projects. They are in the garage. At least the bobbin is visible under a clear plastic plate cover so you know when it is close to running out of the thread.Used it on occasion.Yesterday I sat down to play with my new machine, just to get the feel for it, and wound up with a front and back panel for a new purse that I had no plan on making.I purchased a 9985 Quantum for all the fancy stitches but it struggled with heavy fabrics and heavy threads for bag making projects so I bought a Professional 5 Serger and this machine to do the heavy duty work.I got this machine in late May, and didn’t get around to really using it until about a month later.I do not do fancy stitching but frequently find a need for a three position needle setting, and zig-zag stitching.I’ve done some mending and got to use the stretchy zig-zag stitch which was so incredible, I didn’t know what I was missing.

Easy to thread and operate.I have the machine on a study desk and the cord comes out too short.so finally bought this model a few weeks ago and have been quickly learning. My issue is with Singer customer service—or lack thereof.I just haven’t made enough stuff yet.It has handled a couple tough fabrics with ease.I ordered it because I want a heavy duty machine, to sew outdoor gear for myself. It was sloppy, noisy and did a rotten job no matter how hard I worked. All I was doing was making simple 100% cotton bandanas. After completing one animal, the bobbin failed to load, and after repeated efforts, the bobbin threader appears to be broken.Let me rephrase that, I was introduced to the sewing machine in 8th grade home economics and haven’t touched one since the class ended. If you want lots of fancy stitches and an embroidery option, the Brother machine may be good.Seems it just goes out of whack every so often, tangles the upper thread completely around the bobbin carriage and locks up tight with a “thread lock”.The 2 Star Option says, "I don’t like it" so this is where this review lands. It seemed like it was time to replace or repair it.The tension seems good but I really, really paid attention to the directions making certain that I threaded it through all the guides properly.I will post an update in a couple of months to address the durability issue., In my opinion the main places the machine might be tricky is in winding the bobbin correctly,, thread breaking while you are sewing, and knowing how to use the machine with the feed dogs engaged so you could use free hand embroidery which would require a free hand embroidery foot which is not expensive it could with a button hole foot and button foot you can do a host of different types of projects with it, I am very pleased with my purchase. My dad had an earlier version of this and it’s really a trooper for any household sewing needs.
