To put that in perspective, I’m 42 years old and a father of 2.I purchase this: Brother XM2701 Lightweight, Full-Featured Sewing Machine with 27 Stitches, 1-Step Auto-Size Buttonholer, 6 Sewing Feet, and Instructional DVDThis sewing machine is great for beginners, it comes with a lot of accessories and the DVD is very helpful in setting you up.i spent all of about 20 minutes reading the manual, and after that minor introduction i was able to repair a huge hole in a pair of pants AND to custom-fabricate a sleeve to direct mail from the garage door mail slot into a box located a couple feet away.I call mine “Slappy” because the upper thread tension is so loose even on the tightest setting is slaps the thread all over the place-even down into the work area.and the machine was a little larger than expected, but not overly so.Final thoughts:I wanted to buy a good quality, simple to use and an affordable sewing machine, Brother XM2701 fits the bill.Love the needle threader, the extra feet and automatic bobbin drop in feature.A friend said this is a great little machine for quickie projects and i have one!Came same day, packaged in Brother packaging, nicely done no problems.Tension problems from day one.For instance, the automatic needing threading and bobbin loading features were quite nice to have.Set it up.The bobbin holder came loose so lower tension thread started tangling.I had a dinky little machine that would always jam up and I was certain it was because I’m an idiot.Seven and a half years later, I decided fabric gift bags are too expensive to buy so MUST learn to make them.I bought this sewing machine a few weeks ago, and it’s my first commitment buy.LolPurchased during Prime Day as a Christmas present.I read a lot of reviews and decided on this machine.I haven’t sewn for years, and that was on a basic-stitch vintage Brother portable, so I went with a Brother machine.

lsoDj says:

I had the Brother project runway sewing machine, which was five years old.For me, it’s the basics of this machine that make it a winner. This one certainly has some nice bells and whistles. All the different stitch options have made it possible for me to try a lot of things.I needed a portable machine to take outside to sew some strapping on our dune buggy frame… and to do some misc sewing for outdoor projects.Inexpensive plastic parts so I do not expect this to last long.It lasted me over 10 years but it was too old and I needed something better to fix my scrubs.I’d recently lost some weight and kept it off long enough that I felt comfortable altering my clothes.I did have to review the DVD over and over to figure everything out.The last time I had used a sewing machine was in Home Ec back in middle school, and this machine has many more whistles and bells.sad because the previous brother i purchased was great….It came in and looked fine, but is broken..Every machine has its own "personality" and I was able to adapt quickly to this machine when helping her.The sewing machine had stitch and jamming problems right out of the box.Spooling a bobbin was really easy, too.Wasn’t that hard for me but for someone who has never use a sewing machine before it can be quite overwhelming.Three weeks into using it, it’s stopped functioning properly. However, maybe that is what drew me to choose this machine as well.

vvwNGi says:

It is very easy to use and seems like a good quality and sturdy. It’s very easy to use, and there’s tons of great videos online to help you get started. We like the machine and it works well.5 months with minimal use and just collecting dust in the house now.PROS: easy to use, lots of functionality, quiet.I spent weeks doing research on sewing machines for beginners and I’m happy I chose this one.Even though it looks solid, some important pieces like the hook and bobbin case are cheap plastic. It is terrible. From whiffleball to professional baseball.I highly reccomend reading the instructions that come with it and familiarize yourself with the stitches, there are so many that come with this really and truly that unless you’re doing some intricate work it’s all you’ll need.Once I got the hang of the needle threader I was hooked. It was easy to setup and learn and she loves the threading guide which is printed on the machine! Two issues: 1) The lever to raise the presser foot is in an odd place, and 2) she is left-handed and of course, the machine’s controls are right-hand oriented.I find it easy to operate with the help of the videos, and it’s a great help that there are directions printed all over the machine itself.A new piece to add to me wearable art line.) I wanted something with more precision so my alterations would look more “professional”.Also, the reverse button is an aweful design. This one can be portable as well as stationary. So easy, he figured it out withing minutes with zero help from anyone.Brother XM2701 is equipped with Automatic Bobbin winding system and needle threading assist .

) + shooting DIY video tutorials.3 different presser feet including walking foot and ball point needles and it still gets stuck in machine feed dogs and jams. There are a lot of reviews that state there are problems with the tension on this machine, and yes, I am finding that to be an issue.I was in love with this machine.I bought a cheap $80 brother at Walmart and it was terrible.I loved it.At first I loved it, so quiet, easy to use, very user friendly.I love my Brother CS6000i.This is my first machine. It offers nearly 60 decorative stitches. The reviews of this machine and not wanting to purchase a high end machine since I wasn’t sure how my new adventure was going to go led me to buy this sewing machine.I have never written a review before although I rely heavily on them and base my purchases on them.I was unsure I would like an electronic machine, had learned many years ago on a treadle machine, mom’s Westinghouse and later her White machine that I inherited and let go of .I ended up taking it back after a week.Initially I went with the XL2600i but quickly canceled my order after placing the order.I love this machine. So after quite a few intensive projects I have to say I really like this machine! I did read the whole instruction manual and have followed it without any problems.I cant sleep without sewing..I had been borrowing a friend’s older Kenmore 385, which I really liked, and this machine is easily as capable as that one.

VxVbM says:

I’ve never sewn before and this machine seemed like a good beginner machine that would do a lot without costing a fortune.5" long "buttonhole" to my dog’s winter vest to thread his harness’s webbing and leash ring through .I am self taught on a machine from the 60s.After contacting Brother via email and phone, the problem was still not resolved.I got it to replace a Singer heavy-duty which I ordered a few weeks ago and just did not like – it was not fun to use and not very user-friendly, also the gray color was surprisingly depressing to look at.Anything larger and it, and you, will struggle simply due to the size of the throat space. If I take to someone to have fixed it will cost more than what I paid for the machine so I am junking it and buying a Janome MOD-19.I had no real problems with it until the past few months.I should I spent more on a sewing machine… Trying to making some Christmas gifts and I’m about to throw this thing out the windowI was just looking for a lightweight, straight stitch machine for less than $150.There may be a slight learning curve if you’re used to sewing on vintage machines like I am, but in spite of that I was up and running quickly after reading the manual. While I love the automatic selection guide and speed control, this machine struggles to go thru thick layers that my old machine has no problem doing. If the problem with the sewing machine isn’t something that’s covered under the warranty, you’re paying a repair shop over $100 to fix it which isn’t worth it considering the cost of the machine. This machine has worked very well.I have taken long breaks from sewing in this time period due to time constraints but have been using it more lately. The first pair I made was 12.If you’re intermediate or advanced, you’ll probably want something better. But for sewing and quilting, it’s ok until you get the dreaded E6 error. This machine has many features, yet has been so easy for me as a beginner to use.I think ‘ll be fine now and explore all the things this lightweight machine can do.

PnSVwx says:

Great for beginners, easy to use and set up.The minute I started using it, I could tell the quality difference versus my older machines.Machine makes it easy to explore different sewing techniques which is great for a beginner.I’m a basic sewer so I wanted some advanced options to let my capabilities grow but I didn’t want to spend a fortune. It has so many features that are mostly available on machines that cost much more.Well! To my surprise and delight she looked on YouTube and figured it out herself real quick. It was making weird sounds, and I decided it wasn’t worth trying to get it fixed. It doesn’t take long to get to know it..I never would have imagined I would make so many pretty things. It has been perfect for sewing quilts, dresses, project bags, pillowcases, etc. However within sixty days after delivery it simply froze up.So far she has made a couple table runners,a stuffed animal, some quilt blocks and a stocking.I sent the 2nd Brother back and I chose a Singer,SINGER 8060 600-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine with Extension Table, Bonus Accessories and Hard Coverit’s pricier, but better made and easy to use, the Brother CS6000i is easy too, but it has too many problems with needles breaking, thread snapping, bobbin breakage, I just gave up with this machine.I mostly do garment construction and this machine is awesome for that purpose.and decided to join a quilting club and need a new machine….I had taken a break from sewing when my kids were young and wanted to update now that my first grandchild is coming and I have quilts, etc planned. So far I love this machine.I read the manual, then watched two youtube videos on the threader. The kids love the variety of stitches and getting to thread the machine themselves, and the moms love the kid-friendly speed control.

mWSOj says:

So coming to this machine was something of a step back for me, but I tried to not let my experience with high-end machines color my review of this product. All the instruction booklets and wrappings were factory sealed.I first bought a lightweight Brother, but it made me want to throw it out the window.Really disappointed with these product. The base is robust.Originally, I was just going to buy new cushions, but my existing cushions have curved shapes and I didn’t want the cookie-cutter square cushions they sell at the box stores.I am by no means a sewer, though my mother was when she was younger, so I know the basics and that’s it.I tried adjusting the tension on both the top and the bottom spools, making sure the fabric was free from loose threads under the foot, making sure nothing was caught anywhere else, threaded correctly, etc.But after trying and trying I finally found the Singer sewing machine class for this particular one. What a big mistake! That bobbin is totally useless.Although I needed about 7 you tube videos to figure out how to thread the machine, this is not because the machine is difficult but because I have ZERO sewing skills.I then purchased the Singer 1304 and within 15 minutes I had it up and running and I went from it taking me at least 2 hours to do all my stitches to less than 2 minutes.Absolute piece of garbage, would not recommend by any stretch of the imagination!I am completely happy with this purchase. The machine isn’t bad but as someone with absolutely NO experience I was hoping for something that didn’t require reading an instruction book and squinting over diagrams. It was my first time ever using a sewing machine so the instructions for how to put the string were not that easy to understand, but I looked for a video on YouTube that helped me a lot and on the same day I managed to sew my first item, a soft blanket for a baby.Found the thread cutter on the side a few times after using the machine.1, was the manual.

vKjFp says:

1, was the manual.Loading the bobbin was easy and I have not had any issues with jamming.I love my other Singer sewing machines and was looking for something basic for piecing quilt tops when traveling. But with some support from an experienced adult, it’s very manageable.I used to do some dress making, but these days I’m mostly doing alterations. After reading reviews of seemly all the machines, I knew I no longer needed anything but basic.Putting the bobbin in is about a 10 step process.I have only used at the initial set up.Amazon sent a replacement asap.I loved the fact the Singer 1304 was small but extremely sturdy.second one worked okay for awhile and whole bobbin apparatus popped out, could not repair. My granddaughter threw the box away, so I can’t return it.It is a very nice machine with basic features. Most of the steps are easy to thread the needle and thread into the machine but the problem I had arose when I finished sewing and cut the line, when I went to do another line the thread would come out of the needle and it would need to be re-threaded again.I chose Singer because I had many machines over the years. This machine is great for beginners, basic options and easy to use.But being just an ordinary dude with basic needs, this machine very much fulfills its purpose.I followed the manual to set it up.

rmNPtH says:

I chose this brand because it had good reviews and has been around for a long time. Now I’m stuck with it.It was very simple to set up and easy to use – she was able to sew her first pillow. It constantly comes unthreaded, skips stitches, will only sew two pieces of fabric at a time, will only do a straight stitch , etc.I even had a very experienced seamstress look it over and not even she could make it work.It is easy to use and easy to set up.It is easy to operate and lightweight. Our daughter loves this machine! She is a beginner and was able to catch on rather quickly!Love it! So easy to use.I had not bought a sewing machine in at least 30 years.I kind of had an idea about how to use it..It is an older machine and heavy.Sewing is my hobby and I am an experience little tailor.I have had it for several months and have had no issues! Sure, I have gotten the thread stuck a few times in the under compartment but once you work with it a while you get the hang of it!! Would recommend to beginners. My good sewing machine is in Florida and I purchased this one for my summer place where my children live and often have repairs that need Mom to fix.FRUSTRATING[/review6]<!– .that I do.Con: The foot pedal.

I have five machines ranging from Singer to Kenmore and a serger plus an antique Singer Feather Weight machine that sews flawlessly and have been sewing for 45 years so I know a little something about the craft.the thread was jammed in the bobbin area.I should have waited on giving a review. It was cheaper and the only difference seemed to be fewer stitch options.I’d like to try my hand at leather luggage is my end goal. This was fixed by setting the stitch WIDTH to 0.I was going to purchase this machine back in November, as I needed a machine to handle automotive upholstery and other heavy fabrics. The stitch selection covers anything I might have need for , and the auto-buttonhole function is pretty cool.In that time I’ve made close to 30 quilts, 20some purses, totes and bags, and about a dozen items of clothing. The regular sewing machine just couldn’t handle either of those.Weighs about 35lbs and has an externally housed motor) for years. This machine feels cheap and flimsy. Both died with the same problem: The bottom thread just tangles under the fabric, and does not interlock with the top thread. The only catch is that I have to take it to an official warranty center.I had an old Brother that lasted for years…and I abused it with heavy weight fabrics, etc.I settled on this machine after reading reviews that suggested that starting with a beginner-friendly machine might leave me looking to upgrade shortly in order to sew heavier fabrics like canvas, which I intend to do.I have used a variety of machines over the years and I would recommend this machine.Usually when I forgot to lower the presser foot, and got a bird’s nest in the bobbin area for my trouble.Although seeing so many positive reviews, I was not as impressed.I kept telling myself that the fault could not be the brand new Singer machine because in my mind, Singer has a good reputation.

The machine was well packed. Some of the repairs were just blown seams – a couple involved the heavy strap webbing.Singer customer service has been very responsive via email by suggesting ways to resolve my issue.I read a review complaining about the speed but she loves it, that and the ability to handle heavyweight materials.Since I am familiar with sewing machines in general, mind you I am not a pro just familiar with how the mechanism works.Within a month it started bird nesting on bottom of the sewing….The first thing I noticed was how bad the light is.In short, my machine had a clearance problem in the mechanism that picks up the upper thread and winds it around the bobbin.Planned on making quilts, and doing basic hem work. When she went to use it, it was clearly not working properly .The first 2 projects I completed were made of a fairly heavy canvas type material. The thread keeps breaking even on quilted projects. They are in the garage. At least the bobbin is visible under a clear plastic plate cover so you know when it is close to running out of the thread.Used it on occasion.Yesterday I sat down to play with my new machine, just to get the feel for it, and wound up with a front and back panel for a new purse that I had no plan on making.I purchased a 9985 Quantum for all the fancy stitches but it struggled with heavy fabrics and heavy threads for bag making projects so I bought a Professional 5 Serger and this machine to do the heavy duty work.I got this machine in late May, and didn’t get around to really using it until about a month later.I do not do fancy stitching but frequently find a need for a three position needle setting, and zig-zag stitching.I’ve done some mending and got to use the stretchy zig-zag stitch which was so incredible, I didn’t know what I was missing.

SDTuxn says:

Easy to thread and operate.I have the machine on a study desk and the cord comes out too short.so finally bought this model a few weeks ago and have been quickly learning. My issue is with Singer customer service—or lack thereof.I just haven’t made enough stuff yet.It has handled a couple tough fabrics with ease.I ordered it because I want a heavy duty machine, to sew outdoor gear for myself. It was sloppy, noisy and did a rotten job no matter how hard I worked. All I was doing was making simple 100% cotton bandanas. After completing one animal, the bobbin failed to load, and after repeated efforts, the bobbin threader appears to be broken.Let me rephrase that, I was introduced to the sewing machine in 8th grade home economics and haven’t touched one since the class ended. If you want lots of fancy stitches and an embroidery option, the Brother machine may be good.Seems it just goes out of whack every so often, tangles the upper thread completely around the bobbin carriage and locks up tight with a “thread lock”.The 2 Star Option says, "I don’t like it" so this is where this review lands. It seemed like it was time to replace or repair it.The tension seems good but I really, really paid attention to the directions making certain that I threaded it through all the guides properly.I will post an update in a couple of months to address the durability issue., In my opinion the main places the machine might be tricky is in winding the bobbin correctly,, thread breaking while you are sewing, and knowing how to use the machine with the feed dogs engaged so you could use free hand embroidery which would require a free hand embroidery foot which is not expensive it could with a button hole foot and button foot you can do a host of different types of projects with it, I am very pleased with my purchase. My dad had an earlier version of this and it’s really a trooper for any household sewing needs.

I had a Brother CS-6000i, and while I did a surprising amount with it, it would struggle on the aforementioned areas.Since my regular machine, a Brother, isn’t for heavy duty sewing, I thought I should look into a machine that could go through multiple layers of fabric, interfacing and batting more easily.I only used it a few times. When I tried stitching the lining to the leather, the machine jammed. This machine is small, about the size of a regular sewing machine and does not come with a case.Has no accessories included. It did not work well from the first stitch. The next 10 mins it slow noticeably and start jamming.I have owned about three Singers in my lifetime and this is buy no means any more Heavy Duty than anyone I have owned in the past.I have another machine with more bells and whistles, but I find that it stalls and thread breaks when I do heavy duty crafts or home décor projects. Can handle thick fabrics.Sews clothes and heavier duty items.More durible, sturdier than expected for the price and weight.A machine at this price should last a little longer than 2 uses.Shortened several pairs of Jeans and it didn’t miss a stitch going over the seams.YouTube helped immensely with threading , bobbin loading, etc.Sewing patches on leather![/review1][review2]I make a lot of things, my favorite is to make bags and totes.

I have been sewing for oh so many years. This machine does 1,100 spm, not bad for the price. It happened exactly 31 days after purchase, Singer wouldn’t help & it was out of warranty by 1 day.The biggest advantage I thought I was getting was the self-threading needle capability.Decently powerful for a home model. This has a lot of options for different stitches stitch width and stitch length so I was just using a paper napkin to try them all out.It is absolutely amazing! I have never had such a good sewing machine! I have only had it for three weeks so I will update my review once I have had it for a few monthsI made about 3/4 of a scrub top- just cotton fabric when it simply died. The simple mechanics in this product is what makes it reliable as compared to product with electronic circuit boards. It is very easy to use run sery smoothly I am very satisfied with my purchase. It has the same stitch for tension “0” as for tension 4,5 or 6.I was able to flash out a small tear in in my Levi’s pants. The weight of the machine helps keep it stable and sturdy for quicker sewing.I have been sewing since I was in the 5th grade and this is the first new machine that I have had in nearly 40 years. It arrived in good condition in it’s sturdy box on the promised date.It does not move around on the table when I’m sewing. It won’t even stitch a thin layer of vinyl.I stitched one inch, pressed the reverse button to lock down my stitch, ran a one inch reverse stitch released the reverse button and it would not come out of reverse. The only thing I couldn’t get it to sew through was a thirty-year-old leather motorcycle vest.I am very unhappy with it’s poor performance.

I have gone through a couple of other sewing machines I use mine alot, they either just stop working and sewing a proper sew. Thanks to AmazonThis product will not sew multiple layers of vinyl. The Heavy Duty model is just that, it handles thicker material with ease and I love the automatic needle threader .A sido una buena compraThis machine is difficult to thread, load the bobbin, the automatic needle threader doesn’t work….It’s plastic. This sewing machine is exactly what I expected.I am so happy I finally bought this machine. All failures! Somehow with this sewing machine it all works! The tension works impeccably according to the instructions, and I think that is key.I did however read the reviews on this machine, some from professional seamstresses which gave it good to fair reviews.Have a project that I need to complete but can’t.The timing on my machine got off instantly and I had to get another machine.I don’t understand the problem but the machine ha been functional and easy to use.Cost about same as my cost for service repair of my mother’s high end sewing machine.Sadly, after about 10 hours of use it jammed up in the bobbin area.If not for that I would have given it a better rating. So far… works great and wish I had purchased it a year or two ago.I make quilts and literally wore my first one out.
